Support programme for national security, the prevention of radicalisation, and peacebuilding in Côte d'Ivoire
Since the end of 2011 and after a decade of political, security and economic crisis, Côte d’Ivoire has been making progress towards stability. However, there are still several challenges to overcome in order to achieve lasting peace and dynamic economic development.
Taking into account not only the volatile regional context in which Côte d’Ivoire is developing but also the causes of internal tension which affect the country and given the worrying nature of the situation and the high risk of short and medium term destabilisation, the Delegation of the European Union, in close collaboration with the Ivorian authorities, has decided to implement a targeted programme to support national security and peacebuilding in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Programme
The support programme for national security, the prevention of radicalisation, and peacebuilding in Côte d’Ivoire is financed by the European Union through the Instrument contributing to Stability and Peace (IcSP) with a budget of €2.5 million. Implemented by Civipol, the programme began on 20 March 2017 for a duration of 24 months.
The main aim is to give targeted support to national security and peacebuilding efforts by tackling potential sources of tension and conflict in the most vulnerable areas. This is undertaken by strengthening national security and the Ivorian authorities’ capacity to prevent radicalisation.
To do this, the national security strategy needs specific support in the fight against radicalisation and for operational capacity-building of the intelligence services to ensure rights are respected.
