AJUSEN – SUPPORTING JUSTICE AND SECURITY IN NIGER

The AJUSEN project, funded by €3,998,300 from the European Union’s Emergency Trust Fund began in February 2017 and will end in December 2020. Its aim is to support the Nigerien Government in operational capacity building for its national security forces (NSF) by supporting a stronger criminal justice chain and better security networking to respond to the complex issues faced by the area (migration management, people trading and trafficking, organised crime, etc.).

The project aims to provide structure and long-lasting solutions in the areas of training, supporting and advising the security forces.

Aims

The project has three aims :

  • Provide support and advice to the NSF by preparing continuous training programmes for each force.

  • Fill in any gaps in staff training for NSF departments. The training provided is for all sections of the NSF including customs and Water and Forests. The range of training is varied and responds to the specific needs of each of the forces involved. Examples of training: collecting customs intelligence and preparing criminal proceedings, judicial handling of minor crimes, fighting corruption and money laundering, and organised crime investigation techniques.

  • Provide support for managing borders through structuring exercises including supporting the creation of a professional training module for border officials. To make such efforts permanent, this action also includes creating a training department to deliver the module within the National School of Police.
